The title of dental hygienist is bestowed upon members of the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec [Order of Quebec Dental Hygienists] (OHDQ). This order, headquartered in Montréal, is mandated by the Office des professions du Québec [Office of Quebec Professions] which means their members have the exclusive right to hold the the title and practise the profession.
The OHDQ, founded in 1975, has over six thousand members and safeguards the profession through their administrative council, co-chaired by members of the Office des professions du Québec, overseeing the order and ensuring the values (respect, empathy, commitment, etc.) of the order are promoted. The order further supports their members through their placement service allowing businesses and members to post their service and job offers. Additionally, they also have a variety of different publications such as their magazine L’Explorateur to keep their members up to date on current events in the field. They even have their own boutique offering a variety of helpful regulatory guides.
In order to become a dental hygienist in Quebec, an applicant must hold a diplome d’étude collégiale (DEC) in dental hygiene. The annual cost of membership costs $370.88.
Being mandated by the Office des professions du Québec, the designation gives members the right to practise the discipline and is sure to give applicants entry to a rich and fulfilling career.
