Geologists research rock formations and other geological processes naturally occurring in the earth.
The title of geologist is bestowed upon members of the Ordre des géologues du Québec [Order of Quebec Geologists] (OGQ). This order, headquarted in Montréal, is mandated by the Office des professions du Québec [Office of Quebec Professions] which means their members have the exclusive right to hold the the title and practise the profession.
The OGQ contributes to the field not only by acting as the discipline’s foremost regulatory body, but also by circulating up-to-date news on the discipline to its members through its publications. They even try to get their members to actively participate in OGQ events, offer them personal liability insurance, and even a job board. They also offer university students a grant called the Bourses Étienne-Martin and access to an internship program for university students.
Potential candidates for the order must have a bachelor’s degree of science in geology and must pass a examination on professional ethics. Additionally, as with all professional orders located in Quebec, applicants must be able to speak French at a professional level of proficiency.
Being mandated by the Office des professions du Québec, the designation gives members the right to practise the discipline and is sure to give applicants entry to a rich and fulfilling career.
