Certified Health Insurance Specialist
Certified health insurance specialists handle medical claims typically in healthcare facilities, insurance agencies, clinics, and other related organizations.
The Certified Health Insurance Specialist (CHS) designation is bestowed upon members accepted into the professional—and nationally recognized—association the Institute for Advanced Financial Education (The Institute) who, through their accreditation process, maintain the professional standards of the health insurance specialist discipline.
The Institute is a straightforward organization who is the only Canadian provider—with over 5,000 members—of this unique designation. They are members of The Financial Advisors Association of Canada (TFAAC/Advocis). Additionally, they offer the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (CH.F.C.) designations and have a recognition system for their outstanding members.
Their certification program, provided by Advocis, is short (it takes only 120 days), incredibly affordable (costing approximately 600.00 per course), and accessible from anywhere with an internet connection. It does not stipulate any prerequisite educational requirements so anyone can enroll in their online program consisting of three courses: Disability Income Insurance, Critical Illness, Long-Term Care & Group Living Benefits, and a financial elective. However, members are required to stay updated by taking yearly courses. It is offered in a self-study format by Advocis with online distance learning; however, Advocis has many educational partners that offer the same courses in universities.
Due to its exclusivity, it is an advantageous designation to possess. The designation will give financial advisors credibility while practicing in the specialized health insurance field. It is incredibly accessible, affordable, and a sound investment.
