Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) are basically two different words for the same role. The second term, RPN is used only in Ontario, while LPN is used in all other locations in Canada.

Differences with RN (Registered Nurse) come essentially from diplomas ( LPN/RPN study for a shorter period of time – 2 or 3 years versus 4 years for the RN). Their duties are a little bit different too, as LPN/RPN may have less extended set of responsibilities, while RN are expected to do more critical thinking on the job for example.
