A medical technologist runs analyses on medical samples to determine the state of a patient’s health and to identify any possible evidence of illness in a patient’s system.
The title of medical technologist is bestowed upon members of the Ordre professionnel des technologistes médicaux du Québec [Order of Quebec Medical Technologist] (OPTMQ). This order is mandated by the Office des professions du Québec [Office of Quebec Professions] which means their members have the exclusive right to hold the the title and practise the profession. The order is headquartered in Montréal.
The order protects the medical technologist profession from malpractice by ensuring all their members conform to the norms and roles outlined by the order. They are tasked with protecting the public and managing their own members’ behaviour through six different committees: one of which is focused on bringing in younger, new professionals to invigorate the professional community. Additionally, they hold a variety of professional events such as an annual conference and a national week in order to promote the field, exchange information, and network with other professionals. They also recognize their most outstanding members for their service with three different awards and even offer a student award.
Applicants interested in joining the order are required to have a technical diploma in biomedical analysis (TAB). Additionally, as with all professional orders located in Quebec, applicants must be able to speak French at a professional level of proficiency.
Being mandated by the Office des professions du Québec, the designation gives members the right to practise the discipline and is sure to give applicants, and professionals with an equivalency from abroad, entry to a rich and fulfilling career.
